In 2024, Michael Lydon's father, Thomas Patrick Lydon, entered hospice care. There was no binder on the shelf. No spreadsheet on the desktop. No one person in the family who knew where everything was. Michael and his six siblings were left to figure it out together — with no professional support and no roadmap.
The moment that defined everything came early. Thomas was a veteran, and the family needed his DD-214 — the military discharge document required for burial benefits, military honors, and VA survivor claims. No one knew where it was. No one was sure it still existed. While their father was still in hospice, the family scrambled to locate a single piece of paper that would unlock the benefits he had earned through his service. They found it. Many families don't.
What followed was months of settling the estate — closing accounts, coordinating across siblings in different states, tracking down documents that no one had thought to organize while there was still time. Every step was harder than it needed to be. Not because the family didn't care, but because no one had built the thing that would have made it simple.
